Even though some instruments take a lifetime to master, many percussion
instruments are initially easy to access. This single benefit is a huge plus in
developing music abilities.

We all know that beating a drum is great fun. It’s downright contagious. Celebratory! Kids consider it one of the ‘good’ music things to do. But rather than getting carried away with projects and
workshops that focus on ‘Anyone Can Hit A Drum’, it seems much better to look a bit further ahead, to develop programmes that
can help sustain musical growth.

Pupil’s benefit immensely from the sound, appearance, touch and feel of high quality,
hand made instruments. Older instruments can often help sustain pupils’ interest in the music they make. Luminous Music draws on a diverse collection
of seasoned instruments from various world cultures, choosing between sounds
that are both exciting and suitable for different projects and abilities.
Ideally we want to access a deeper understanding of music over time. We want to
give pupils access to enhanced levels of technique, ways to invent music that
reflect these values.

Older music forms are information rich, and today educators see the significance
of what this really means. We have finally begun to look more deeply within
original cultures at the sources of percussion instruments and the music they
make. Here we find large and interesting stores of information on music
protocol, on rhythm, tonality, polytonality, orchestration and technique. These
are sources where cultural values and knowledge have been maintained, where
world music forms can be learned and applied to an awareness of music in our
culture.
‘Old-growth’ cultural forests are also where ‘new-growth’ ideas seed and flourish. As we ‘walk’ into these cultural forests we discover deep connections to the process of
music making itself, and finally we see the contribution that other cultures
have secured for our own music and for the future.
