"His music is unique. . . . . awakening certain energies in the body and mind,
not so much on a spiritual level but on a deep historic, mythological and
cultural level, awakening some sort of hidden and unseen, unfelt sense, maybe
the element Akash as in sanskrit, (the 5th element) the one that carries sound
itself."

Jon Keliehor’s extensive involvement in dance, theatre and film has produced a highly ‘visual’ music, creating links between Indonesian gamelan, percussion and experimental domains. Performance artists and dance companies in the USA, UK, and Venezuela have mentioned that his music may only be comprehensible to shamans, venomous snakes and twigsmen. The jury is still out, however upon listening to it many have survived. What we do know is that Keliehor transforms his music with a hyper-real attention to the detail of percussion sounds, and a handful of other deceptively simple instruments. The music that results from this obsessive devotion is mostly contemporary; a surreal kaleidoscope of aural landscapes and harmonic possibilities.
His music journey has been a restless pathway that has included:
Percussionist with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra
Drummer for West Coast Psychedelic groups Daily Flash, Bodine
Composer, percussionist, lecturer London Contemporary Dance Theatre
Director of music Percussion Research Ensemble, Diorama London
Performer with Lindsay Kemp Theatre Company, LCDT, Dream House
Film Music: Dancers, Class, Troy Game, Melissa’s Lullaby, Impermanence
Director: Luminous Music Studios
Music production for Lisa Lyon’s Icons Of The Divine
Percussionist Cornish College of the Arts/Dance
Composer, performer Gamelan Pacifica, Gamelan Naga Mas
Composer, performer with Venezuelan dance company DanzaHoy
Director: Luminous Music (Glasgow)
Recordings of his music have been published on Touch, Indipop/Virgin Records,
ATV-Bruton Music, What Next?/Non Sequiter Records, O.O. Disks and Luminous
Music.
The divergence of this musical direction has provided a large catalogue of
recorded music, much of it experimental, non-mainstream, compositions for
dance, theatre, film, TV, etc. His compositions emerged in 1972 and by 1985 he
had written music for most contemporary dance companies in London. During this
time many creative opportunities and collaborations led him in a wide variety
of musical directions. His long time interest in the tonalities of gongs and
bells brought an affinity to Indonesian music, and the music of SE Asia. The
music within the recordings East Meets West, DreamHouse, and Celestial Nile
were turning points that seeded many new areas of composition. The Luminous
Music collection documents this diverse range of music.
